There are a lot of big names in the Sandy pest control industry. Here are a few reasons why it makes sense to go with a local pest control company like OIRC over the national brands

What Sets Us Apart

Integrity

It would be easy to fool someone when delivering termite control services. Traps, bait, and sprays are often not visible to the consumer, and even if that’s not the case it can be difficult to be sure how well-laid they truly are. Beyond that, excuses for why initial attempts fail are easy to find, drawing property owners into spending more money to follow the advice of the “experts” who aren’t doing their job right. At Oregon Insect and Rodent Control, we only use brand-name products, and we use them according to their specifications for maximum effectiveness. We don’t cut any corners in our care for customers.

Honesty

Needless upselling is common practice by the giants of the pest control industry. Our founder Glenn experienced it firsthand, and it’s the major reason why he left to start his own company. We only sell products and services that we are confident are really going to be helpful. But we don’t expect you to simply take our word for it – we operate with as much transparency as possible so you can be assured that we are trustworthy. Our goal is to establish long-term relationships of trust with our customers, not get them to open their wallets out of desperation.

Education

Our process of pest control is more than laying bait and leaving. If we see a way that you can prevent pest problems from reoccurring or even handle your pest control problem on your own, we let you know, even when it means we won’t be able to charge as much. Education is a key part of the integrated pest management (IPM) approach, through which we can achieve better results in a more environmentally friendly way, as you can read about next.

Care for the Environment

At Oregon Insect and Rodent Control, we realize that this is the environment we will pass down to our kids. We live and work in Oregon, and have no national corporate protocol to inhibit our doing what’s right for the place in which we live. Our policy is to deal with your pest control problem using minimal chemicals, applied strategically for greatest results. The indoor environment matters, too. Where some companies will force you to watch out for your own welfare as they spray, we let you know the risks and take steps to minimize your family’s exposure to substances which might not be good for them.

Relationships

Our favorite thing about this industry is the relationships we form with customers as we help solve their pest management problems. If our customers need us again, we want to be the ones who come first to mind as the pest control experts to call. For those who experience regular invasions or want to prevent an incursion before it happens, we are happy to provide quarterly or bi-annual services. Note that we don’t do monthly service plans like a lot of the other guys – we find that charging for those extra visits isn’t necessary when we use pest control products according to their own recommendations

Experience

With over 18 years’ experience operating as an independent Sandy termite control company, we’ve seen it all and know the products and methods to apply in order to effectively and quickly manage most any pest problem you might be experiencing.

Sandy Termite Control Services

We commonly deal with a couple different kinds of termites in our work as termite exterminators. Treatment methods for both varieties are similar to what we do for ants and other varieties of insect: use a combination of sprays and baits to manage termite populations.

Colony SizeTermites are social insects which live in large colonies, though the dampwood termite has a smaller colony size when compared with other termite species. There are three castes in their society: reproductives, workers, and soldiers.

Termites are often confused with carpenter ants, though they have a very different appearance.
CharacteristicDescription
ColorBrown
LengthLengths up to 3/4 inch
AppearanceTermite antennae have bead-like segments. The winged reproductives (swarmers) have a pair of long wings (equal in size) attached to the last two thoracic segments. The wings are broken off after swarming. The abdomen is broadly joined at the thorax unlike the narrow abdominal attachment found on ants.
BreedingThe founding male and female create a sealed chamber in infested wood and within two weeks produce approximately 12 eggs. A second batch of eggs is laid the following spring.
Where they liveThese termites infest almost any kind of wood and tolerate very high levels of moisture. They often are found in dock and wharf pilings, logs, stumps, and dead trees – though water-damaged wood in a house or other structure may attract their presence.
Food SourceUnlike carpenter ants, termites do eat wood.
Behavior NotesThe western species swarm in summer through fall. Most species swarm in the evening and are attracted to light.
Signs of presenceBeyond tunnels dug in the ground and in wet wood, fecal pellets are oval with flat sides, about 1/32 inch long and the color of the infested wood.
RisksTermites can cause damage to wood. They do not carry any diseases which affect humans, and are not harmful from a medical standpoint unless there is an allergy concern.

When we engage a client for termite control, we look for the telltale signs of dampwood termites and recommend ways to manage their colonies for the long term.

Subterranean Termite Control

Colony SizeAn average colony consists of 60,000 to 250,000 individuals but colonies numbering in the millions are possible.

Termites are often confused with carpenter ants, though they have a very different appearance.
CharacteristicDescription
ColorCream-colored to black
LengthLengths up to 1 inch
AppearanceDepends on their position within the colony, though in general they possess large heads and long abdomens.
BreedingA mature queen produces 5,000 to 10,000 eggs per year.
Where they liveSubterranean termite colonies are usually located in the soil from which the workers build mud tubes to structural wood where they then feed.
Food SourceTermites digest cellulose in wood with the aid of special bacteria within their digestive system. The workers prefer to feed on fungus-infected wood but readily feed on undamaged wood as well.
Behavior NotesSubterranean termite colonies are established by winged reproductives which usually appear in the spring. Swarms usually occur in the morning after a warm rain. A male and female that have swarmed from an established colony lose their wings and seek a dark cavity inside which they mate and raise the first group of workers. Both of these reproductives feed on wood, tend the eggs, and build the initial nest.
Signs of presenceBeyond tunnels dug in the ground and in wet wood, fecal pellets are oval with flat sides, about 1/32 inch long, and the color of the infested wood.
RisksTermites can cause damage to wood. They do not carry any diseases which affect humans, and are not harmful from a medical standpoint unless there is an allergy concern.

When we engage a client for termite extermination, we look for the telltale signs of subterranean termites and implement ways to manage their colonies for the long term.

termite Control Tips from
Oregon Insect and Rodent Control

What are some ways to reduce the risk of developing termite control problems?
  1. Keep them homeless
Reduce the available habitat within your home or place of business where a pest might want to set up a home of their own. This means keeping things clean and free especially of food particles.
  2. Seal cracks and crevices
Pests come in from the outside environment, meaning you can reduce the chances of their taking up residence in your home by sealing up cracks and crevices, particularly around your foundation, eaves, doors, and windows.
  3. Clean up
Get rid of stacks of newspaper, miscellaneous papers, bags, cardboard boxes, and other material which a pest might use to make a good home or nest. Wipe up spills and crumbs right away, and don’t leave dirty dishes lying around.
  4. Keep a lid on it
Keep a tight lid on trashcans and empty them often, especially if you are throwing away fragrant or sweet things. When storing food in your pantry and cabinets, store it in tightly sealed containers.
  5. Keep the space dry
Indoor pests often thrive on moisture. Keep them from getting the water they’re looking for by fixing leaks and not leaving dishwater in the sink overnight.
Can you help if I have a pest problem in my crawlspace?
We are able to perform crawlspace restoration at a reasonable price. If you’ve been quoted a price by one of the big pest control companies, make sure you talk to us before you sign anything, as they tend to charge quite a bit to get into those hard-to-reach places.
What products do you use?
We use a variety of excellent brand-name products which we have tested over the course of our 18 years in business, and we use them at label strength. We never use generic products that produce uncertain results.
Do you perform emergency services?
We can give you emergency advice and often get out to help you with your pest control problem within a day or two. Give us a call to set something up as soon as possible.
Do you have monthly service plans?

There are two reasons some termite control companies have monthly service plans: a desire for a larger stream of income and the use of diluted or insufficient products. We find that when we do our job right, the most we need to visit one of our clients is once a quarter or bi-annually in the spring and fall.

Are your traps humane?

We do what it takes to remove pest control problems, and often that means killing them. Our traps do seek to cause minimal pain to pests as they dispatch them.
